On April 29, a driver in Brooklyn was shot and killed by NYPD after allegedly hitting a police lieutenant while trying to flee from a traffic stop. The NYPD Community Response Team had observed the driver behaving erratically and noticed the car had mismatched license plates, likely from a stolen vehicle. When officers attempted to block the driver on the Belt Parkway, he collided with a lieutenant, who returned fire, fatally wounding the driver. A passenger was detained, and the lieutenant sustained minor injuries during the incident.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, the NYPD Community Response Team spotted the driver operating his vehicle erratically along the Belt Parkway in East New York at about 8 p.m. on April 29.
Rather than engage the driver in a pursuit, the sources reported, cops moved to stop him by attempting a blockade on the westbound Belt Parkway at the Pennsylvania Avenue exit.
Despite being struck, authorities said, the lieutenant opened fire on the vehicle, sending a bullet penetrating through the car's windshield and hitting him in the chest.
Police ask the public to steer clear of the area as the NYPD investigates. Significant traffic delays were reported on the Belt Parkway.
