"But we must continue her fight, and we will continue that fight because the need has never been greater. Under Trump's cruel administration, working families are suffering while the wealthiest thrive; immigrants and people of color are being attacked, arrested, and erased; our rights are being trampled; and the safety net that families could once depend on is getting callously cut to shreds."
"She is the progressive pioneer who laid the groundwork for an entire generation of new leftist voices at every level of government, and no one can replace her presence,"
Antonio Reynoso declared his candidacy for the U.S. House seat being vacated by Nydia Velázquez, who will retire in 2026 after three decades in office. Several other progressive officials are reportedly exploring runs, including Council Member Tiffany Cabán, State Senator Kristen Gonzalez and Assembly Member Claire Valdez. Reynoso praised Velázquez as a mentor and progressive pioneer and framed his campaign as a continuation of her fight, criticizing policies he said harm working families, immigrants and communities of color. Reynoso is a Brooklyn native, left-leaning Democrat with over 15 years in local politics, a former City Council member for the 34th district and a 2021 borough president winner with more than 72% of the vote. The NY-7 district covers neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens including Bushwick, Williamsburg, Long Island City, Astoria and Fort Greene.
