Brooklyn bodega worker claims self-defense in fatal scuffle with 'neighborhood nuisance' who threatened to 'f-king kill' him
"I grabbed him and he fell on top of me and we were fighting,"
"When I got up, I saw all the blood and thought I was bleeding. I went to the bathroom to clean up and I realized it was his blood."
"It was broken. It was a stick we used to break ice with."
"He said, 'I want to fight you. I'm going to f-ing kill you. Any one of you come outside and fight'."
Kelvin Melo, a Royal Deli & Grill worker in Bushwick, engaged in a physical struggle with Gerry Hill after Hill allegedly barged into the store and hit a clerk. Melo grabbed Hill and the two wrestled on the floor; Melo initially thought he was bleeding and then realized the blood belonged to Hill. Another clerk, Mukel Shaibi, intervened and reportedly struck Hill with a broken stick used to break ice. Hill left the store, was taken to the hospital, and subsequently died. Melo and Shaibi have been questioned by police but have not been charged.
