'Brooklyn Backs Jamaica': Local pols lead relief effort for Hurricane Melissa victims * Brooklyn Paper
"I'm proud to join the Brooklyn Borough President, the Jamaican Consulate, and my colleagues in government to support relief efforts for those impacted by Hurricane Melissa. By coming together and using Brooklyn Borough Hall as a collection site, we're showing that our community stands united in compassion and action when our neighbors are in need."
"absolutely heartbreaking."
Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and several local officials organized a "Brooklyn Backs Jamaica" resource drive to support Jamaicans recovering from Hurricane Melissa. The drive runs through Nov. 26 with drop-off hours Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., at Brooklyn Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon St. Requested items include diapers, formula, body soap, feminine hygiene products, first aid kits, and gloves. Hurricane Melissa caused at least $6 billion in damage, affected more than 600,000 people, damaged over 120,000 structures, and left half the island without power. More than 180 shelters remain open, housing over 2,400 people.
