The United Senior Center of Sunset Park is at a critical crossroads as the lease expiration approaches in June 2023. Community leaders and residents rallied again, advocating for the center's survival amid a proposed 70% rent hike. This adjustment would strain the center financially as the NYC Department of Aging can only provide a maximum 5% fund increase, which the landlord has rejected. The center has served the community for over 51 years with essential services for seniors, making its potential closure a significant loss for the area.
"For over five decades, the United Senior Center has served as a special place where seniors of different backgrounds gather for meals, activities, programs, and support," said NYC Council Speaker and mayoral candidate Adrienne Adams.
"United Senior Center of Sunset Park is incredibly crucial to our community and has been for multiple generations," Councilmember Alexa Avilés remarked, emphasizing the center's role as the heart of the neighborhood.
