Amplifying Hip-Hop's Revolutionary Spirit at BAM
Briefly

Brooklyn Academy of Music's Word. Sound. Power. returns to showcase artists who blend poetry and activism, spotlighting the ongoing legacy of hip-hop. Scheduled for April 25 and 26, 2025, the event features artists like Nejma Nefertiti and Sincerity Garcia, curated by Baba Israel with music by resident DJ Reborn. With its roots in the impactful narratives of 80s and 90s hip-hop, this series remains a platform for activist artists, reinforcing hip-hop as a vital tool for social change and cultural expression after 20 years at BAM.
The world, as it always is, is on fire. In this moment, our ability to speak and seek truth has never been more important.
Inspired by hip-hop pioneers like Public Enemy and Queen Latifah, the featured artists will use music and spoken word to confront injustice and inspire change.
Now a cornerstone of BAM's programming, Word. Sound. Power. builds on a 20-year tradition of spoken word at the cultural institution.
The 2025 edition, titled Power to the Poets, will highlight the enduring legacy of hip-hop as a force for truth, resistance and revolution.
