30 years of Brooklyn Pride: How the borough's twilight march became a Fifth Avenue tradition
""There were a lot of great relationships between people from Queens and Brooklyn. And then, after Queens started, Brooklyn felt it was time to have our own.""
""The first-ever Pride Parade and multicultural festival kicked off at Third Street and Fifth Avenue and concluded at Prospect Park.""
""Heller, an attorney and Bronx native who has spent several decades living in Brooklyn, first became involved with Brooklyn Pride in 2007 and 2008 when he was asked to drive former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz's parade float.""
Brooklyn Pride was established in 1996 by residents including Jerry Allred and Sonia Galarza to create a significant Pride event in Brooklyn. The first Pride Parade and multicultural festival took place on June 14, 1997, starting at Third Street and Fifth Avenue and ending at Prospect Park. Mickey Heller, co-chair of Brooklyn Pride, noted the strong connections between Brooklyn and Queens that inspired the event. Heller has been involved with Brooklyn Pride since 2007 and became co-chair in 2012, making him the longest-serving board member.
