3 firefighters, 1 tenant injured in Brooklyn house fire, FDNY says
""It took them about 10 minutes to remove them from the debris field," Meyers said. "They're both beat up, battered and bruised because of the amount of debris that was on top of them. They're at Brookdale Hospital right now, but we don't believe there are any significant injuries to any of our members.""
""Thankfully, in learning lessons over the years, having those special operation units will go in to get us when we're in trouble," an FDNY official said."
""The street was very pitch black, cloudy with smoke," Thereisa Robinson added. "It was very tragic to watch. No one wants to lose their home. No one wants to be in a fire, and also the firefighters, their lives they put on the line to save others.""
Firefighters responded to a Williams Avenue home in the New Lots section to find large flames on the first-floor rear. Crews brought the blaze under control in about 15 minutes before the second floor collapsed, sending two firefighters to the first floor and trapping them under debris. Rescue teams removed the trapped firefighters in about ten minutes; both suffered smoke inhalation and were described as battered and bruised and taken to Brookdale Hospital. A third firefighter and one tenant also sustained injuries and were hospitalized in stable condition. The fire displaced four families and required two dozen units and over 100 fire and EMS personnel, with special operations units assisting in the rescue amid heavy smoke that obscured the street.
