UMass study: Ticks behind serious bacterial infections, meat allergies are in New England

A study by the University of Massachusetts Amherst reveals two unusual types of ticks in Maine capable of transmitting rare diseases, including those that can be fatal. Researchers from the New England Center of Excellence of Vector-borne Diseases discovered an unusual number of rabbit ticks during a tick control study, some of which carried Rickettsia microbes related to Rocky Mountain spotted fever. While there is a low risk for human infection, the findings stress the need for further study and monitoring of these ticks, particularly regarding the potential transmission to humans.
