A collaborative initiative between Allston Village Main Streets and Project Place aims to enhance the cleanliness of Allston while helping formerly unhoused or incarcerated individuals rebuild their lives. Through a city beautification grant, the two organizations have launched a twice-weekly street-cleaning program. This program addresses long-standing community concerns regarding trash and graffiti, as expressed by local stakeholders. The project not only aims to create a more welcoming environment but also to transform lives as participants contribute to the beautification efforts by cleaning various streets in the area.
Thanks to a new partnership between Allston Village Main Streets (AVMS) and the Clean Corners program at Project Place, Allston isn't just getting cleaner - it's also becoming a place where lives are rebuilt on the sidewalk, one sweep at a time.
AVMS executive director Alex Cornacchini said, 'For as long as I've been in this role - and even before, just as someone hanging out in Allston - the number one concern I've heard is about trash and graffiti, they're two sides of a similar coin.'
Cornacchini began leading AVMS in 2019 and has long dreamed of a more beautiful, welcoming Allston - a neighborhood which has also been dubbed 'Rat City.' 'Beautification is core to our mission,' he said.
The partnership was made possible through city beautification grants distributed to Main Streets districts across Boston. This meant enough funding to launch a twice-weekly street-cleaning program that will last for two years.
