In Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a raccoon attacked a young man in a Market Basket parking lot. Upon responding to the report, police found no sign of the raccoon or the victim, who later contacted them while receiving medical care. Fortunately, the man is in stable condition, though the raccoon remains at large. Authorities noted that it is common to see raccoons out during the day in spring, as female raccoons forage for food, sometimes exhibiting aggressive behavior. There is currently no evidence linking the raccoon to rabies.
"This time of year is when you have all the female raccoons that will be out there in the day foraging for food sometimes. They can be extremely aggressive."
"Following the incident, police were not able to locate the raccoon, and there is 'no definitive information' confirming that the raccoon was rabid."
