The MBTA celebrated the introduction of two new ferry boats on Tuesday, named as a result of a competition among local third and fourth graders. These boats, which underwent refurbishment, will operate two distinct routes connecting Winthrop and Quincy directly to Boston. MBTA officials emphasize the importance of community engagement, as students’ submissions reflect local culture and pride. The names, "Harbor Gem" and "Abigail Adams," were chosen for their creativity and historical significance, showcasing the students' enthusiasm for their local transit system.
The response from the students was "extraordinary," he said. Two of the new names selected from the competition were unveiled Tuesday: Harbor Gem and Abigail Adams.
As we prepared to integrate these boats into our service, we saw the opportunity not just to rename them, but to make them part of the local community.
