Carolyn Sanger, a 49-year-old mother from Topsfield, Massachusetts, tragically fell 50 to 75 feet while hiking at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation with her children. The fall, believed to be the result of a loss of footing, occurred around 2 p.m. Despite medical aid from fellow hikers, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Friends and family remember her as a selfless and caring mother, who was a beacon of light in the lives of those she touched, especially during her 20 years of marriage. Investigators are treating the incident as accidental.
"For those that knew Carrie, know that she was a bright light; a wonderful, selfless mother who has raised four incredible, respectful, responsible kids."
"She's an amazing, amazing human," her husband, Michael Sanger, told WCVB. "She was the brightness and the light on a dark day for a lot of people."
