Mass. lawmakers take Stop & Shop CEO to task after study finds inner-city price gouging
Briefly

Massachusetts lawmakers are urging Stop & Shop to follow through on promises to lower grocery prices after reports revealed the chain charges more in urban areas than affluent ones. A recent investigation highlighted that despite some price reductions in Jamaica Plain, Stop & Shop continues to charge higher prices in other inner-Boston neighborhoods, which raises concerns about its impact on lower-income communities. Senators and Representatives voiced their disappointment and called for equitable pricing across locations to better serve all residents, not just those in wealthier suburban areas.
The April 2025 investigation suggests that despite lowering grocery prices in the Jamaica Plain location, Stop & Shop is "still charging higher prices at other inner Boston locations, suggesting that Stop & Shop continues to profit at the expense of lower-income communities."
Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey and Reps. Jim McGovern and Ayanna Pressley emphasized: "While we are glad that Stop & Shop reduced prices at the Jamaica Plain location...overall, these results are disappointing."
