Lawyers for Karen Read are seeking to dismiss charges against her regarding the 2022 death of her boyfriend, Officer John O'Keefe, alleging serious governmental misconduct. This appeal follows a prior trial that ended in a hung jury. Read's defense claims prosecutors withheld evidence and presented misleading video footage. They assert Read was framed and propose an alternative theory concerning O'Keefe's death. Meanwhile, prosecutors have denied any ethical breaches, arguing that the defense's claims are a misrepresentation of the events.
Both sides were in U.S. District Court in Boston earlier Wednesday as Read's lawyers asked a federal judge to drop two of the charges against her in the 2022 death of her boyfriend.
With weeks to go before the retrial, the defense team has accused prosecutors of withholding some of the surveillance video of Read's SUV at the Canton Police Department and misleading jurors.
Read's lawyers maintain she was framed in a law enforcement coverup, floating an alternate theory that O'Keefe entered the home for an afterparty and was beaten.
Prosecutors filed a response disputing 'any ethical violations or misconduct' and accusing Read's lawyers of 'brazen misrepresentation' surrounding claims of purported jury tampering.
