Livestream: Karen Read trial returns after unexpected day off
Briefly

Karen Read's murder retrial is paused due to her illness, impacting proceedings in Norfolk Superior Court. While the absence was unexpected, a court spokesperson confirmed it resulted from health issues affecting Read. Earlier sessions featured rigorous questioning of State Police Sgt. Yuriy Bukhenik about former Trooper Proctor's derogatory remarks regarding Read, which raised serious concerns about professionalism in the investigation of her boyfriend's death. Despite recognizing Proctor's capabilities in other assessments, Bukhenik condemned his prior statements as lacking integrity and honor, leading to ongoing discussions about ethical standards within the police force.
Bukhenik also confirmed he praised Proctor for his "utmost professionalism and competence" in a fall 2022 performance evaluation, despite earlier derogatory remarks against Read.
"That text message does not show integrity," Bukhenik testified Monday, responding to inquiries about Proctor's inappropriate comments regarding Read.
Jurors earlier this week sat through a third and final full day of testimony from Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Yuriy Bukhenik, who faced bruising questions from defense attorney Alan Jackson.
Court officials indicated the cancellation of Tuesday's proceedings was due to health issues affecting Read herself, emphasizing the unforeseen nature of the scheduling change.
