Karen Read's retrial continues with focus on expert testimony regarding the injuries of Officer John O'Keefe. Defense biomechanic Andrew Rentschler stated that O'Keefe's skull fracture and abrasions were not caused by Read's SUV. Dr. Elizabeth Laposata, a defense pathologist, added that O'Keefe didn't die from hypothermia, suggesting a different cause of injury that contradicts the prosecution’s view. This evidence aims to challenge the narrative of a drunken rage incident cited by prosecutors after a night out in January 2022.
We were kind of constrained in what we were asked to do and to review, but we were asked to evaluate whether the injuries sustained by Mr. O'Keefe were consistent with being struck by [Read's] Lexus.
He would be immediately incapacitated with a decreased level of consciousness once he received that impact on the back of the head. He would not be able to make any purposeful movements.
