First white shark sighting of 2026 confirmed off Massachusetts coast
""These sightings contribute to our scientific understanding about sharks in our local waters, helping us to understand the health of their populations and the marine environment that supports them," Dr. John Durban, a senior scientist in the Aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, said in the release."
A dead gray seal was found on Lucy Vincent Beach in Chilmark, Martha’s Vineyard, with a visible wound. A Wampanoag Tribe natural resource investigator reported the suspected shark bite to the state Division of Marine Fisheries. Aquarium scientists reviewed photos and confirmed the wound matched white shark bite patterns. White sharks are among more than 15 shark species found in New England waters seasonally. White shark season is beginning, with shark numbers expected to rise through summer and peak in fall. Beachgoers are urged to avoid areas with seals or schools of fish and to stay close to shore where responders are stationed. The public is encouraged to report sightings and use the Sharktivity app to support safety and scientific research on local shark populations and marine ecosystem health.
