"happy to be in Arizona [for Spring Training] where his family is. I have enormous respect for Alex, but it wasn't meant to be and we moved on."
Alex Bregman signed a five-year, $175 million contract with the Cubs after leaving Fenway Park. Boston offered a five-year, $165 million deal that included significant deferred money spread across multiple decades. Bregman sought a full no-trade clause; Chicago agreed to provide one while Boston did not. Red Sox chairman Tom Werner denied any organizational policy against no-trade protection. President/CEO Sam Kennedy declined to detail negotiation policies, praised Bregman's season in Boston, said Bregman chose a different path, and wished him well as the club moved on.
