Tigers Designate Tomas Nido For Assignment
Briefly

The Detroit Tigers announced that catcher Tomas Nido has been designated for assignment to make room for Jake Rogers, who is returning from injury. While Nido has a high batting average of .343, it comes from a limited number of hits and a lack of walks, raising questions about his long-term viability. He has struggled offensively in the past and is recognized primarily for his defensive skills. The team hopes Nido can clear waivers to retain him in their minor league system as depth.
Detroit will happily take the month-plus of solid backup work for Nido and would surely love to pass him through waivers in order to retain him as a depth option in Triple-A Toledo.
Nido's DFA shouldn't come as a huge surprise. Though he's hitting .343 with Detroit, that's a 12-for-37 sample that's consisted entirely of singles and has come without a walk.
