"Eaton, 29, an infielder and outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, who had just one home run and four RBIs last season, took the game's first pitch to deep left-center field to give Britain a 1-0 lead before Skubal retired Jazz Chisholm Jr., Harry Ford and B.J. Murray to end the inning."
"All told, Skubal allowed two hits on 41 pitches, 30 of them resulting in strikes. He struck out five and walked none before taking a seat in the American dugout. Clay Holmes, a starter for the New York Mets, replaced him to start the fourth inning."
"There is no offer, and there won't be an offer until the end of the season. ... My focus is on playing baseball and winning this year. I'll deal with the contract stuff at the end of the year, and then we'll kind of see."
Great Britain's Nate Eaton homered on the first pitch of a World Baseball Classic game against Team USA, giving Britain an early 1-0 lead. Tarik Skubal, the defending AL Cy Young Award winner, made his only appearance of the tournament, pitching three innings and allowing two hits while striking out five batters on 41 pitches. Despite Skubal's strong performance with 30 strikes, Britain maintained its lead. Before the game, Skubal addressed his contract situation with the Detroit Tigers, stating he has not received a long-term offer and expects negotiations to occur after the season concludes.
