In a game between the San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox, the Padres attempted a hidden-ball trick that resulted in a balk call against them. With Jarren Duran on third base, Toronto pitcher Wandy Peralta could not stand on the rubber, leading to the rule infraction. This allowed Duran to score and gave the Red Sox a 2-1 lead. San Diego manager Mike Shildt took responsibility for not preparing the team adequately. The game ended with the Padres winning 5-4 in 10 innings after a key hit by Ramón Laureano.
With Jarren Duran on third base and one out in the third inning, Machado still had the ball after Alex Bregman was caught in a rundown on the previous play. Duran pointed to the mound and third base umpire Scott Barry called a balk, scoring Duran to give Boston a 2-1 lead.
By rule, the pitcher cannot be on the rubber for a hidden-ball trick to be legal. If another player tags a runner while the pitcher is standing on or straddling the rubber, it's a balk.
San Diego manager Mike Shildt acknowledged responsibility for the balk incident, emphasizing the need for better preparation during spring training, saying, 'You just can't be on the rubber when that happens.'
The Padres won 5-4 in 10 innings when Ramón Laureano singled in former Red Sox star Xander Bogaerts from second with no outs.
