"The Red Sox made their needed addition to the upper half of the rotation with this morning's trade. The veteran righty slots between Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello in an impressive top three. The Sox have a handful of talented younger arms (e.g. Payton Tolle, Connelly Early, Kyle Harrison, Tyler Uberstine) who can compete with injury returnees Kutter Crawford and Patrick Sandoval at the back of the rotation."
"It's impossible to know exactly what the order of operations will be. So we'll continue to look for opportunities to improve the team, but I wouldn't say we're going to exclusively focus on one thing at the expense of the other. ... And so I don't think this is a close off all opportunities and look exclusively at position players, but I also think that there's a chance that that comes into focus now over the next couple of weeks."
The Red Sox added a veteran right-handed starter to the upper rotation, slotting him between Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello to form an impressive top three. Several younger pitchers — Payton Tolle, Connelly Early, Kyle Harrison and Tyler Uberstine — can compete with returning starters Kutter Crawford and Patrick Sandoval for the back of the rotation. Team priorities now tilt toward adding an impact power hitter while still evaluating further rotation improvements. The club is unlikely to pursue Kyle Tucker because of a stockpile of left-handed outfielders. Other potential targets include Bo Bichette, Pete Alonso, Munetaka Murakami, Kyle Schwarber and Alex Bregman. Boston carries just over $154 million in guaranteed commitments, and arbitration projections for Crawford, Tanner Houck, Triston Casas and Romy Gonzalez are expected to add roughly $10–12 million.
