Pedro Martinez expressed his astonishment regarding the Boston Red Sox' recent trade of Rafael Devers, calling it surprising and mishandled. Martinez defended Devers against critics who questioned his character, affirming his dedication and love for the game. He pointed out shortcomings in the team's communication strategy, suggesting that former players should be involved in discussions about players' positional changes. Instead, he criticized the front office's handling, which he believed led to misunderstandings and contributed significantly to Devers' frustrations with the organization.
"I was shocked, just like everybody else," said Martinez. "I was shocked, because if you try to sell to me-knowing Rafael Devers-that Raffy is a bad teammate, or he's not a team player, you're lying."
"The thing got mishandled from the get-go," Martinez explained of the fallout between Devers and the team, noting that he thinks it would've been better had experienced players been in the discussion.
