Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty will not run in Preakness Stakes
Briefly

Trainer Bill Mott announced that Sovereignty, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, will not participate in the Preakness Stakes, deciding instead to focus on the Belmont Stakes. This news definitively eliminates the possibility of a Triple Crown winner for the year. In light of this, Bob Baffert's horse Rodriguez, who missed the Derby due to a hoof issue, could now take on the role of favorite for the Preakness, pending the status of other contenders.
"We received a call from trainer Bill Mott that Sovereignty will not be competing in the Preakness. ... We extend our congratulations to the connections of Sovereignty and respect their decision."
"Most importantly, the decision will be made to do what's best for the horse. ... It looks like he's come out of the Derby in good shape."
