"I don't like to speak ill of any player. I'd like to say that he's a wonderful person,"
"But, of course, when we had an injury at first base his unwillingness to play that position was extremely discouraging."
"It's what I've played. I don't know what their plans are. I know we had a conversation. I made it clear, kind of what my desires were and whatever happens from here, I don't know."
Rafael Devers began 2025 spring training as one of baseball's top sluggers for the Red Sox. A few months later he was traded to the San Francisco Giants following a protracted dispute over defensive positioning. Boston signed Alex Bregman with plans to move him to third base and shift Devers to designated hitter, but Devers resisted leaving third base, insisting it was his position. Devers led the AL in errors at third base from 2018-24. After Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury, Devers declined to move to first base and publicly criticized front office decisions, deepening the rift.
