Hunter Greene To Undergo MRI On Right Elbow
"If something has to be done, it's early and we'll get it out of the way quick and can have the big chunk of the season. If we have a playoff push, I'll be ready to go. Greene expressed optimism about managing any necessary treatment early in the season to ensure availability for the team's playoff push."
"Greene has been one of the game's best pitchers on a rate basis over the past two seasons but has missed considerable time due to a pair of groin strains in 2025 and some elbow discomfort in 2024. He's started 45 games across the past two seasons and worked to a 2.76 ERA with a 29.2% strikeout rate, 8.1% walk rate and 33.5% ground-ball rate."
"Greene acknowledged in his comments that, like many big league pitchers, he's aware of some bone spurs in his elbow. He's navigated that issue in the past, it seems, and surgery has not been recommended as an option to this point."
Hunter Greene, the Reds' ace pitcher, is undergoing an MRI after experiencing stiffness in his right elbow that originated late last season. Manager Terry Francona announced the evaluation at spring training. Greene received an injection recommendation during the offseason but recently experienced recurring discomfort. Team physician Timothy Kremchek and Dr. Neal ElAttrache will examine him. While his ulnar collateral ligament remains intact, Greene has bone spurs in his elbow, a condition he has managed previously without surgery. The 26-year-old, a former No. 2 overall draft pick, has been one of baseball's most effective pitchers on a rate basis over two seasons but has missed significant time due to injuries. His availability for the season's opening remains uncertain.
