
A veteran right-hander was released after pitching for the D-backs’ Triple-A affiliate in Reno. He had signed a minor league deal in the offseason, made the Opening Day roster, pitched 3 2/3 innings, and was designated for assignment. After clearing waivers, he elected free agency and rejoined the organization on a new minor league contract, continuing to pitch for Reno. In 21 innings of mostly long relief, he posted a 4.29 ERA in a hitter-friendly environment. His strikeout rate is low, but his walk rate is also low, his ground-ball rate is high, and his contact quality is relatively light. He has extensive major league experience, multiple injury setbacks including Tommy John surgeries, and recent seasons with the Brewers and Phillies. As a free agent, he could provide low-risk bullpen length or swingman depth.
