Rafael Devers moved off third base after Alex Bregman was signed and became the team's designated hitter when Bregman took over at third. Reports indicated Boston did not disclose its pursuit of Bregman to Devers, creating communication problems. Devers initially resisted moving off third and later refused to play first base after Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury in May. Devers was traded to the West Coast on June 15. The Red Sox made the 2025 playoffs while the Giants missed the postseason. The organization acknowledged it should have informed Devers but stated there are no regrets about the trade.
