2025 Red Sox in Review: Lucas Giolito, one of the Sox' most important players in 2025, probably won't be back in 2026
"But, a week later, Giolito pitched six shutout innings against the Rays. And for the rest of the season he was one of the very best pitchers in all of baseball. From June 10 through the end of the regular season, Giolito's 2.51 ERA was the fifth-best mark in MLB. He threw the 14th-most innings and compiled the 23rd-best fWAR amongst pitchers during that stretch. Without the midsummer's dream woven by Giolito and Brayan Bello, the Red Sox unequivocally do not make the postseason."
"Giolito's back-of-the-baseball-card success masked an issue that he struggled with all season, including during his excellent June-September stretch: his lack of control. His 3.64 BB/9 was the sixth-worst mark in all of baseball amongst qualified pitchers during that stretch. (Free Agency Warning: Dylan Cease posted the single worst walk rate.) He walked six batters in one early August start against the Padres, and would issue another five free passes in two more starts before season's end."
Lucas Giolito missed all of 2024 and the start of 2025 but returned to post an All-Star-caliber season in 2025, finishing with the 20th-best ERA+ in baseball. He struggled early with high run totals and a truncated spring training before turning the year around on June 10. From June 10 through the regular season he posted a 2.51 ERA, threw the 14th-most innings and compiled the 23rd-best fWAR during that span. He was instrumental to the Red Sox reaching the postseason. Persistent control problems remained, with a 3.64 BB/9 and multiple starts with five or more walks. A 2026 return appears unlikely.
