The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education voted to adopt a weighted lottery system for admissions to popular vocational high schools, such as Blackstone Valley and Madison Park. This decision, supported by the Healey administration, aims to provide equal opportunities for students, particularly for those without significant disciplinary issues or excessive absences. While some priority may be given to applicants demonstrating interest in career technical education, the state legislature is considering blocking this rule. The administration plans to invest in expanding vocational education opportunities, including a proposed budget for increasing CTE seats by 3,000 over three years.
"Every student deserves a fair shot at exploring their passions and building a future that they're excited about," said Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler.
The state's education board voted 8-2 to use a weighted lottery system to distribute the in-demand seats at the vocational high schools.
