Rhode Island's Attorney General announced that Barletta Heavy Division Inc. will pay $11 million to settle criminal charges for illegally dumping contaminated fill during a construction project. The company was accused of misleading state regulators regarding the fill's source. Following a previous federal settlement of $1.5 million, the state pursued its own case, which resulted in this higher settlement. The charges stemmed from Barletta's 2020 disposal during the reconstruction of the Route 6/10 interchange, which involved transporting backfill from other sites. Barletta's attorney expressed relief at resolving the matter.
