"I was just so excited in that moment that we won a championship. I can be 100% honest, there was no animosity, I wasn't upset."
"In a way, we both, like, push each other. [Marcus Morris] has seen it. We always was in the gym, always was playing one-on-one. Part of it was like, we just had to grow up."
"We just had to accept like, we need each other. I haven't had any success without you, and you haven't had any success without me. We both gotta do this together."
Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have grown together since entering the NBA, each being a third overall pick and spending their careers with the Celtics. Their mutual competitiveness and constant work in the gym accelerated development and helped both reach star levels. Tatum produced consistent scoring and a career-high in assists last season but is sidelined for most of this year with an Achilles injury. Brown has assumed first-option duties, averaging 29 points on nearly 50% shooting and guiding the team to a 12-9 record. Both players acknowledge interdependence and shared success, including Brown earning Finals MVP in 2024 while Tatum valued the championship ring.
