Ex-Celtic Marcus Smart recalls 2018 incident that almost made him lose his right hand
"I got rushed to the ER and lost a lot of blood. I passed out. ... That's how much I lost. The doctor looked at me in my eye and told me, 'I don't know how you still have use of your right hand. You should honestly be thanking God every day.'"
"The glass was millimeters away from rendering the hand useless, something that would have been problematic for a normal person, let alone one of the best defensive players in the NBA. They said it laid perfectly in between every tendon in my hand without damaging anything, and they had to leave the extra piece in, because they said it will cause more damage if we go get it out."
In January 2018, Marcus Smart missed a crucial buzzer-beating 3-pointer in a road game against the Lakers, resulting in a one-point Celtics loss. Frustrated, Smart punched a picture frame in his hotel room, driving a 5-inch piece of glass into his palm. The injury was severe enough to require emergency room treatment and 20 stitches, causing him to lose significant blood and briefly lose consciousness. A doctor informed Smart that the glass miraculously avoided damaging tendons and nerves, positioning itself perfectly between them. A fragment remains embedded in his hand to this day. Despite missing 11 games, Smart recovered in time for the playoffs, where the Celtics reached the Eastern Conference Finals before losing to LeBron's Cavaliers.
