Celtics rookie Hugo Gonzalez makes NBA debut, shows promise in loss to Knicks
"Gonzalez, 19, finished a team-best +7 with six points on 3-for-6 shooting (0-2 from three-point range), four rebounds, one assist, and two steals in his NBA debut. The 28th overall draft pick earlier this year played 23 minutes off the bench to aid what was a sloppy starting lineup for the Celtics. Speaking with reporters after the game, Gonzalez said he was happy to get his first minutes out of the way, but wasn't happy that Boston couldn't come out with the win."
"Gonzalez's defensive effort helped make his debut memorable, at least for Celtics fans, anyway. The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Spain native's two steals contributed to Boston's total of 10 on the night, and were perhaps part of the birth of a new Celtics playmaker. Gonzalez, though, said he wasn't impressed with his own defensive performance. Why? "Jalen Brunson dropped 30 points today, so it's not the day to say that I'm a great defender, honestly," he said."
The Celtics fell 105-95 to the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, dropping to 0-2 to start the 2025-26 season. Rookie guard Hugo Gonzalez logged 23 minutes off the bench and finished with a team-best +7, six points (3-for-6), four rebounds, one assist and two steals in his NBA debut. The 19-year-old 28th overall pick provided energetic defense that contributed to Boston's 10 team steals. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 30 points. Boston's starting lineup was described as sloppy, and the team missed a winnable opportunity.
