NWSL Soccer Is Back, But The Scandals Haven't Gone Away | Defector
Briefly

The NWSL commenced its 13th season this weekend with notable victories, including Kansas City's triumph over Portland and Orlando Pride's overwhelming win against Chicago. However, the league faces serious challenges following multiple abuse allegations, particularly against Bay FC coach Albertin Montoya. Former players described his coaching as 'toxic,' detailing instances of bullying and ignored mental health issues. This ongoing controversy overshadows the excitement of the season's start, illustrating a critical need for systemic change in how player concerns are addressed.
We begged and pleaded for help and change, and it never came, one of the former players told the Chronicle.
Montoya would target and bully players in meetings in front of players and staff if they questioned decisions.
Players would come out of the starting lineup and he refused to tell them why, said one former employee.
We don't like to talk about outside noise, but there's been a lot of talk about 'Who's gonna win the shield? Who's gonna win the championship?'
He punished players for speaking up about mental health concerns and would ignore or give players the cold shoulder when he was upset.
