Chara signed with Boston in July 2006 after entering free agency when the Senators re-signed Wade Redden. The Bruins offered a five-year contract worth $37.5 million. Boston had finished the 2005-06 season near the bottom of the standings and had traded captain Joe Thornton, creating a need for a foundational, leadership-driven player.
