Bruins notebook: Morgan Geekie hopes to start scoring on time this year
""Oh, hell no," he said with a laugh, adding later, "Now that I've flown, I'll never drive again. I'll drive back. I don't mind driving home with my dog but driving here is a thing of the past now.""
""A ton," said the 27-year-old Geekie. "I think as someone who's been a couple places (Carolina and Seattle) already and never really had the luxury of playing somewhere for more than two years, just knowing I have the ability to be here for six more years is something that you can't take for granted and something you can't think about until you have a contract. It's just one of those things where I'm able to forget about everything else and just go and play. You've got your contract, you know you have a job for six more years. It's good. It sets me and my family up to settle down here and lay some roots. We're excited.""
Morgan Geekie used to drive from Alberta to Boston for training camp but switched to flying after signing a six-year, $33 million contract. Financial security allowed him and his family to settle in Boston and focus on hockey without relocation concerns. A more relaxed mindset coincided with a strong training camp where Geekie scored a couple of goals and with a season-opener in which he recorded a secondary assist and an empty-net goal. At 27, Geekie had played in Carolina and Seattle and valued the stability of a long-term deal. Last season he increased his goal total from 17 to 33, largely after Thanksgiving, suggesting further offensive upside.
