"As officers turned the corner, they were fired upon by this individual,"
"The officers returned fire, striking this suspect multiple times in the lower extremities."
"Tonight is another reminder of the kinds of risks that our officers face 24 hours a day, and I am very proud and grateful every day for their service and all that they put into taking care of our community members and making sure everyone is safe,"
Officers observed a group of individuals near the intersection of Dudley and Washington streets around 12:45 a.m. One person ran and was pursued onto Kenilworth Street, where the fleeing suspect allegedly fired at officers, striking an officer in the arm. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times in the lower extremities. Both the officer and the suspect were taken to local hospitals with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening. Authorities recovered a high-capacity firearm with an extended magazine at the scene. City leaders visited the wounded officer and praised officers and emergency responders.
