The L Street Brownies polar bear club held its annual New Year polar plunge in South Boston on Jan. 1, continuing a tradition that began in 1904. Hundreds of participants entered the chilly Dorchester Bay waters in a range of attire from traditional swimwear to elaborate costumes. A parade led by the Greater Boston Firefighters Pipe and Drum preceded the plunge. Revelers ran and dove into the ocean amid a snowstorm, with scenes including people dressed as Roman soldiers and classic monsters, followed by celebrations and reactions in the cold water.
