Byron Barnett, former reporter at Boston's 7News for decades, passed away at 69 in Minneapolis, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was known for storytelling about New Englanders, becoming a beloved figure in journalism. Barnett joined WHDH in 1983 and hosted the public affairs show Urban Update. His work earned him induction into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2017. Colleagues praised his reporting skills and personal integrity, expressing admiration for his impact on journalism and the community.
Throughout his four decade career, Byron cherished the privilege of telling the stories of New Englanders who welcomed him into their lives, showing unwavering courage in the face of cancer.
He was such a good reporter and communicator who loved a nasty Nor'easter, or ball game, or presidential race, famously grilling Belichick and interviewing Muhammad Ali.
During his remarks at his induction into the state's Broadcasters Hall of Fame, Barnett said he strived to not only 'get it right' in his reporting but to share stories with the proper context.
Byron Barnett was human first-smart, principled, and honest, everything you look for in a journalist, and showed gratitude to all those in Boston and New England who welcomed him.
