Man resentenced in 2011 slaying of Dorchester teen
"The person responsible may be asking for another chance at life. But Jaivon will never get that chance. He will never turn 17. He will never become a man. He will never get to live out the dreams he had as a 16-year-old who loved basketball and life."
"In 2024, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court reversed his convictions after it determined that Watt was 'denied the right to counsel,' the court wrote in its judgement."
Nyasani Watt, 32, was resentenced in Suffolk County District Court to 14 to 17 years in state prison for the 2011 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Jaivon in Dorchester. Watt pleaded guilty to manslaughter, armed assault to murder, and assault and battery causing serious bodily injury. His original 2013 murder conviction was reversed by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in 2024 after determining he was denied the right to counsel. With credit for time already served, Watt is immediately eligible for parole. If denied, his latest release date is November 2028. The victim's mother delivered an impact statement emphasizing the victim's lost potential and dreams.
