"His reported struggle to receive timely medical attention before being transferred to a hospital raises serious and painful concerns about the quality of care provided to individuals in custody."
"Damas, who was being held in Central Arizona Florence Correctional Center, visited the facility's health clinic on Feb. 17 and 18 to get treatment for a painful toothache. Health care workers at the clinic provided him with over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen but denied him dental treatment."
"On Feb. 19, Damas told family that his condition had worsened, that he could not speak properly, and that he was going to be taken to a hospital. The same day, another detainee at the detention center told Damas's family that he had been 'very sick' for five days and that the staff members at the facility 'lacked urgency' in sending him to the hospital."
Emmanuel Damas, a Haitian man who legally sought asylum in the U.S. in 2024, died in custody at Central Arizona Florence Correctional Center after inadequate medical care. Damas first complained of a toothache in mid-February and visited the facility's health clinic on February 17 and 18, where staff provided only over-the-counter pain medications and refused dental treatment. His condition deteriorated significantly, and by February 19, he reported difficulty speaking and was transferred to a hospital. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and placed on life support. Federal lawmakers, including Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren and Representative Ayanna Pressley, sent a letter expressing serious concerns about the quality of care provided to detainees in ICE custody.
