Mike Greenwell died Thursday in Boston at age 62 after battling medullary thyroid cancer, his wife Tracy Greenwell said. Tracy reported his death occurred at 10:30 a.m. at Boston's General Hospital and wrote that she lost her best friend. Greenwell served as a Lee County commissioner, having been appointed in 2022 by Gov. Ron DeSantis and re-elected in 2024. Greenwell played 12 major league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, made two All-Star teams, won the 1988 Silver Slugger Award, finished second in the 1988 AL MVP voting, and was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2008. He debuted in 1985 and appeared on the 1986 AL champions.
