Boston reports uptick in mpox cases
Boston Public Health Commission is warning of an uptick in mpox cases and encouraging vaccination for residents at higher risk. There is no widespread public health threat at this time, but at-risk people are urged to protect themselves and others by getting vaccinated. Mpox is a viral illness that spreads primarily through close, often intimate contact. Higher-risk groups include gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. A global outbreak has continued since 2022, with more than 100,000 reported cases across 122 countries. In the United States, more than 2,500 cases were reported in 2025, and 390 cases were reported nationwide in the first three months of 2026. Boston will offer mpox vaccinations during the Pride flag-raising event on June 1 at Boston City Hall.
