Yann Martel talks about his new novel, 'Son of Nobody'
"Psoas was his name. Is he to stay in the gloom of Hades, nevermore to see the honey light of the world? What did he do to deserve this chill fate? Let me sing his song."
"I wanted each to have its own space, exist on its own terms. So I thought of this device of having the top half of the page with these lost fragments, fragments of this lost epic tradition, and in the bottom half, footnotes."
Yann Martel's novel 'Son Of Nobody' follows Harlow Donne, a Canadian classicist who discovers a pottery shard leading to the lost epic of Psoas of Midas. Unlike traditional epics focused on kings or demigods, this story centers on a commoner. The narrative employs a two-track storytelling method, with fragments of the lost epic on the top half of the page and footnotes detailing Harlow's family life below. This structure allows both narratives to coexist and be appreciated on their own terms.
