What Melanie Lynskey Watches (and Reads) With Her Daughter
"was just to be in a library, reading. I read all of Charles Dickens's books. I read all of the Stephen Kings. I just read so, so, so many books"
"I read through all their books,"
"They had the complete works of Shakespeare, so I read all the plays and all the sonnets. I really just didn't have a lot else going on."
"No offense, Dada, but Mom is just a little bit better at the voices,"
Melanie Lynskey grew up as an avid reader who often felt awkward as the new kid after frequent moves. She sought refuge in libraries and read extensively, including all of Charles Dickens and many Stephen King novels. During a summer with her grandparents she read through their collection, including the complete works of Shakespeare—plays and sonnets—because she had little else to do. As a mother she has encouraged a love of reading in her seven-year-old daughter, who began reading early and enjoys being read to. Lynskey performs voices for stories and enjoys her daughter's praise. She shares children's books such as Mac Barnett's First Cat in Space series and Sam and Dave Dig a Hole.
