She initially adopted a pen name to protect her medical career while pursuing writing. McFadden began this double life in 2013 with her semi-autobiographical novel The Devil Wears Scrubs. As her literary success grew, she felt it was time to disclose her identity, stating she has shared her true self through her work despite the name change.
