"Why wouldn't there be a Black food bookstore?"
"The kitchen, whether it was my aunt's house or my mom's, was such a center of incredible gatherings around food. The flavors and the stories were inseparable from one another,"
"felt like a natural extension of our relationship."
BEM | books & more opened a physical storefront at Macon and Lewis Streets in Bedford-Stuyvesant in October, specializing in books exclusively by Black authors that tie food to culture, history, and identity. The bookstore operates as one of the first Black-owned, food-centric bookstores in the country and grew from co-owners Gabrielle and Danielle Davenport’s long commitment to uplifting Black voices. Gabrielle’s background centers on supporting Black artists and producing music and dance programming, while Danielle’s background combines literary study with acting and playwriting. The store’s focus traces back to family kitchens as sites of storytelling, flavor, and gathering.
