These books are pushing boundaries': winners of 30,000 Inclusive Books for Children awards announced
"I was delighted to see how inclusivity was incorporated into sweet, funny and engaging stories without overpowering them. These books are pushing boundaries and opening pathways into worlds that need to be represented more."
"Judges praised this year's winners for compelling storytelling, strong visual composition and authentic representation, according to IBC. The inaugural children's choice awards, introduced as a pilot scheme to complement the main prize and encourage reading for pleasure, were voted for by primary school pupils across the country."
The Inclusive Books for Children awards recognized six female authors and illustrators for UK-published titles celebrating diversity for children aged one to nine. This marks the second year all winners have been women since the awards launched in 2023. Winners share a £30,000 prize fund and will present at Hay Festival in May. The children's fiction winner was Supa Nova, a graphic novel about a young Black girl interested in science. The picture book award went to The Beautiful Layers of Me, exploring cultural confidence through traditional clothing. The baby and toddler category winner was Let's Play, featuring accessible formats including braille and sign language. Judges emphasized that winning titles incorporated inclusivity authentically into engaging, compelling stories with strong visual composition and authentic representation.
